Range Hood Exhaust Fan Repair

A kitchen vent hood is a hard-working, underappreciated appliance. When it’s working right, it absorbs all the heat, fumes, smoke and grease out of your kitchen, and either freshens it before recirculating it back into your house, or vents it from the house entirely. But when it’s not working, your kitchen can fill up with heat and smoke before you know it, especially if you burn something.

Common Issues

Issues with your kitchen vent hood can affect the fan, the light, the wiring, or the electronic control panel. You may need the help of a qualified service professional to troubleshoot and repair your range hood. Common problems with this appliance include:

  • Faulty user interface controls
  • A broken fan motor
  • A bad electronic control board
  • A bad fan switch
  • Clogged filters
  • A clogged vent duct
  • Faulty wiring
  • Bad light bulbs
  • A broken light switch
  • A fan that turns off by itself
  • Broken fan blades
  • A loud exhaust fan

Any of these problems could seriously impair your kitchen hood’s ability to ventilate your kitchen and illuminate your stovetop. Most will require professional assistance to pinpoint and repair.

In addition to keeping your kitchen cooler and your indoor air cleaner, most kitchen range hoods also have a built-in light that can come in very handy when you’re cooking a family meal. Your cooktop might be in shadow otherwise, and it can be hard to prepare dishes properly when you can’t see them fully. To cook and live comfortably, you need a vent hood that works.

Should you repair or maintain your range hood exhaust fan?

The average kitchen range hood should last about 14 years, so if yours is older, it may be time to replace it if it starts acting up. That’s especially true if it requires multiple repairs within a short period of time. It’s reasonable to expect that, if one thing goes wrong with a range hood, other things might start going wrong, too, especially if the appliance is nearing the end of its lifecycle.

However, the cost of a new range hood can justify repeated repairs of your old hood, especially if you have a high-end vent hood. New kitchen range hoods can cost $200 to $3,000 or more, with the most expensive models costing upwards of $6,850. The cost of a new range hood installation can vary from $600 to $800 alone, depending on how complex the installation is.

Range Hood Exhaust Fan Maintenance

You may be able to maintain your kitchen hood yourself. Every six to twelve months, check the grease filters. There should be a stainless steel or aluminum filter directly above your cooktop, in the bottom of the range hood. There may be another grease filter inside the vent hood, at the back of the unit, between the range hood and the ventilation ductwork. These two filters, or components of them, may be reusable.

Finally, there should be a filter in the air intake assembly attached to the fan inside the range hood. Usually, this is a disposable charcoal filter that needs to be replaced.

Clean your reusable filters with hot water and a degreasing dish soap, like Dawn. Clean the inside of the range hood with a rag soaked in degreaser or a paste of baking soda and water. Dry it thoroughly and check for loose wires to the fan or light socket, as well as loose bolts and damage to the reusable filters.

With proper maintenance, your kitchen vent hood can last for 14 years or longer. But all appliances will break down eventually. When you need your kitchen range hood repaired or replaced, trust the service professionals in the Candu Pro Network.
